UTOPIA
Utopia is exploring migration, forced displacement, and the experience of exile, with a particular focus on asylum systems and the condition of being displaced into an unfamiliar environment.
The series reflects on people who are forced to leave their homeland because of political repression, economic hardship, war, or displacement, often in pursuit of the possibility of a safer or more hopeful life. Yet this imagined utopia can become a state of limbo, where people remain suspended for years between the place they have left behind and the unfamiliar place in which they now live.
In this in-between state, belonging becomes uncertain. They may no longer fully belong to the place they came from, while also remaining outsiders in their new surroundings. Utopia explores this condition of displacement, the loss of belonging, and the space between departure and arrival.
