KOLBAR

Kolbars are Kurdish workers who carry goods across the mountainous border between Iran and Iraq, often on foot and under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions. For many, this work is one of the few available means of earning a living, despite the risk to their lives. They are periodically subjected to shootings by Iranian border forces, and reports of Kolbars being shot and killed continue to emerge.

Photographed in 2018 in the snow-covered mountains along the Iran–Iraq border, the images place the figures within a vast landscape where the border becomes both a geographical and political presence.
